Matthijs Kaaks (1967) was admitted to the Amsterdam bar in 1993. In the first years of his career, he worked at the law firms Loeff Claeys Verbeke (the Allen & Overy legacy firm) and Hulkenberg Van der Veen. After practicing corporate law for a number of years, he specialised in intellectual property law and media law.
Between 1996 and 1999, Matthijs worked as a freelance journalist in addition to his IP and media legal practice. He was the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Amice, the first Dutch glossy magazine targeted at the legal profession.
In 2002, Matthijs became a partner at the Amsterdam firm Nolen Van der List. Three years later, he decided to open his own firm and founded Boekx, together with Marc de Boer.
Matthijs enjoys a high reputation in the field of slander and libel litigation, inter alia for Quote Magazine, a Dutch business glossy. He furthermore advises various publishing houses, multi media companies and organisations involved in cable TV. Furthermore, Matthijs specializes in copyright, design right and trademark litigation. Matthijs writes a monthly editorial in the journal of the Netherlands Bar Association.
